Happy Anniversary!
81 comments:
I welcome all comments about the material in this blog, and I generally do not censor them. However, please follow these rules:
1. DO NOT COMMENT ANONYMOUSLY. If you do not want to log in or cannot log in with a Google Account, choose the "Name/URL" option and type a name (you can leave the URL blank). If that doesn't work, use the "Anonymous" option but put your name of choice at the top of the entry.
2. Do not link to any commercial entities, including Kickstarter campaigns, unless they're directly relevant to the material in the associated blog posting. (For instance, that GOG is selling the particular game I'm playing is relevant; that Steam is having a sale this week on other games is not.) This also includes user names that link to advertising.
3. Please avoid profanity and vulgar language. I don't want my blog flagged by too many filters. I will delete comments containing profanity on a case-by-case basis.
4. I appreciate if you use ROT13 for explicit spoilers for the current game and upcoming games. Please at least mention "ROT13" in the comment so we don't get a lot of replies saying "what is that gibberish?"
5. Comments on my blog are not a place for slurs against any race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, or mental or physical disability. I will delete these on a case-by-case basis depending on my interpretation of what constitutes a "slur."
Blogger has a way of "eating" comments, so I highly recommend that you copy your words to the clipboard before submitting, just in case.
I read all comments, no matter how old the entry. So do many of my subscribers. Reader comments on "old" games continue to supplement our understanding of them. As such, all comment threads on this blog are live and active unless I specifically turn them off. There is no such thing as "necro-posting" on this blog, and thus no need to use that term.
I will delete any comments that simply point out typos. If you want to use the commenting system to alert me to them, great, I appreciate it, but there's no reason to leave such comments preserved for posterity.
I'm sorry for any difficulty commenting. I turn moderation on and off and "word verification" on and off frequently depending on the volume of spam I'm receiving. I only use either when spam gets out of control, so I appreciate your patience with both moderation tools.
Happy Anniversary! Thank you for cataloging and chronologizing all those games so that they aren't lost to time, allowing some of us to re-visit memories of our own past or just games we might've been interested in but weren't around or didn't have the time back then. And for taking us on an entertaining journey through your writing. And for playing through games like Knightmare so that we don't have to.
ReplyDelete15 years comes out to 131490 hours in real-time, which would be enough for 483 full playthroughs of Fate: Gates of Dawn. Here's to the next 15!
Amazing! Been reading this since my son was born. He's 10, now.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! This blog has been following me for many, many years. Interests use to shift over time but somehow I’m still very interested in your blog and are looking forward to every new post. All the best!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for about ten years as of now, and I'm far from the only one who had stayed around that long, seeing the comments above. It takes a lot to make people follow you for that long.
Congratulations! And thank you for doing something so important and necessary for the history of CRPGs, also creating a whole community of followers interested in it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Doing something like this for 15 years with overall very high consistency is pretty remarkable.
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary! Still the best blog on earth :) Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteParabéns 🥳 Seu blog é incrível. Algumas entradas, como Pool of Radiante, já li uma dezena de vezes ao longo desses anos.
ReplyDeleteFelicidades , y que los dioses vean muchos años mas
ReplyDeleteI barely comment here, but I've read every entry and I always look forward for your posts. Congratulations on your anniversary!
ReplyDeleteVery impressive! Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy blogiversary!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! This blog is one of the bright points of my time on the internet these days. Perhaps that doesn't say much given the enshittification of the internet, but truly it'd be a kindness that this wonderful rabbit hole exists either way.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, post-apocalyptic banner artwork coming soon ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible milestone! Thank you for every obscure piece of history you bring back to life and share with the world!
ReplyDeleteHappy blog anniversary Chet. It has been a great pleasure to follow you over the years. And I'm glad to here you'll continue to provide us with exciting CRPG experiences in the future.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe it's been 15 years already, time flies!
Stumbled on this blog somewhere near the start of it, then forgot about it only to rediscover it during your Fate playthrough. Been an avid reader ever since. Thanks so much for keeping us all informed and entertained!
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary, sir! If you need anniversary ideas, well, I'm still waiting for the glossy hardcover compilation of all these posts...sure would be nice to have an overpriced Kickstarter or a collaboration with Bitmap or something, for those of us 20th-century types who like overpaying for hardcopy books.
ReplyDeleteThat would be really something, I'd happily overpay for a slightly edited phone book version of this blog.
DeleteAt this point, the only way I think this will ever happen is if someone with more time offers to take it on. Maybe I'll put out an RFP at some point.
DeletePerhaps one of our readers in the US bureaucracy took early retirement and has a lot of free time between now and September!
DeleteCongratulations, dear Addict!
ReplyDeleteI've been only following your for ten years of those fifteen, but it's been fun! Glad to see you still motivated, and I hope you get to still do a few contemporaty games on the side.
If I had to guess, you will be playing Baldur's Gate for the 20th ;). Maybe it won't even be that out of order, considering there's not much more pre-1993 stuff, and the number of games 1994-1997 goes down.
If I had to guess, he won't unless he changes his approach. If you look at the tenth anniversary (link below), he was nearly done with 1992 at the time and thought there would be 80 games to get through 1993, with about 350 to go to 1997. He's still in 1993, having done around 150 games since then. Fallout was released in 1997; M&M6 and Baldur's Gate were released in 1998, Planescape:Torment in 1999, and Morrowind in 2002.
DeleteTenth anniversary post: https://crpgaddict.blogspot.com/2020/02/tenth-anniversary.html
I'm considering a change for 1994 and beyond. I'll talk about it when the end of 1993 nears.
Delete...and many more!
ReplyDeleteWell deserved congratulations. Lets hope blogspot lasts as long as you do.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeletehappy anniversary.. I dont remember how long I follow this blog, but I posted 12 year ago about it on reddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/rpg_gamers/comments/q2cjf/the_crpg_addict_is_back_on_track_with_one_goal/
ReplyDeleteAnd I was reading for a few years at that point. So I dont participate much. But enjoyed reading from France for most of my life
Happy blogiversary! You give me (and many others) a lot of pleasure and I'm pleased if our comments make it more rewarding for you.
ReplyDeleteWow, has it already been five years since the "Ten years" series of posts? Time sure does fly if you're having fun reading this great blog. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteYour posting frequency over this long period continues to amaze me and I always look forward to seeing a new entry and your thoughts on another game(play session).
This is cool, hope for many more years of crpg's.
ReplyDeleteChet, your blog is THE best place on the Internet, and I write this 100% straight (would take a long time to explain why).
ReplyDeleteCommiting 15 years to a project is already special enough. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI can say that this blog is a go to stop on the interwebs for me. You inspired me to do my own project and I appreciate that. Even if my wife does not... hahahahaha
ReplyDeleteYou keep posting and I'll keep reading with the occasional comment!
Been reading this blog for most of the 15 years and I just wanted to say thanks for getting me through some tough days. Being able to shut off the outside world and focus on some obscure old CRPG for 30 minutes a couple times a week is a great mental safety valve. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to the games you bring up, document, and share with the world. Here's to another five years!
ReplyDeleteCongrats!! I have been lurking for the last decade and more and love your blog. Book when? 🙂
ReplyDeleteGood question. Although I'm happy to support the Addict via Patreon, I would absolutely jump at the opportuny to buy a collective work(s). Of course, there's been other CRPG books before (I literally have the expanded edition of The CRPG Book right next to me) it would be more to support the continuation of this blog and ensure Chet's work lasts, should this platform ever go away. Not an easy task, though, as publishing takes a lot of work (though a good publisher can ensure Chet's personal life is kept secret!).
DeleteFYI, that Eugene is not this Eugene, the one who has been posting here since year one (but not that often).
DeleteGot it. Hyperlinked Eugene is different from black Eugene.
DeleteCongrats on 15 years, here's to lots more.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 15 and thank you!
ReplyDeleteDo you have stats on engagement or activity around different games or posts?
ReplyDeleteI would love to know which ones generated the most attention!
The number of comments on a given post should give you a good estimate, when 'Ultima Underworld' has easily more than a hundred, but an ugly indie game from back when gets around three.
DeleteUnless an unrelated discussion about (A)D&D editions comes up, then it gets around three hundred.
DeleteOur host might have more detailed statistics to share, but to me a rule of thumb is:
Delete- Any posts about well-known games many people have played and therefore have an opinion on, like the later Ultima and Wizardry entries or more recently Betrayal at Krondor.
- This becomes even more pronounced if it is a beloved console title which - at least partially - clashes with what Chet is looking for in a CRPG. Witness the posts on Legend of Zelda (maybe the highest number of comments overall?) or Final Fantasy.
- Besides that, some Special Topics have created quite a bit of discussion, including, but not limited to, each time our host considered making changes to his approach. Other examples are e.g. those about 'The perfect CRPG: Difficulty', 'Cheats and liars' or the 10th annuversary summary of his 'most controversial opinions'.
- The ones most difficult to find among the 'popular' posts - without having the statistics at hand or just clicking through all entries - are those where the comments suddenly turn into an extensive discussion on a subject that might or might not be related to the game and entry itself, like what Buck wrote ;-).
Reader for just over 8 years. Congrats on reaching such a milestone, and thank you for playing through and documenting so many weird and wonderful games!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! As always, your blog is a pleasure, :-).
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and best wishes for (at least) fifteen more years of blogging
ReplyDeleteI started following this blog while looking around for something that wasn't a walkthrough about Wizardry 6.
It was just a couple of months more of eleven years ago. somehow it still feels like it was just yesterday.
Thank you for your always enjoyable work
Congratulations on hitting 15! And here is to the many more to come!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, this blog is still one of my favourite little corners of the internet after all these years, hope for many more to come!
ReplyDeleteLove you and your fantastic work Chet!
ReplyDeleteI don't often have much to comment, but I've been a Patreon backer for some time now and I read all of your posts. Truly my favorite blog on the internet, so thank you for 15 years of it even if I only discovered it a few years after you started!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chet - for one of the brightest spots on the internet!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Chet, and thank you! I started playing RPGs with Temple of Apshai on my TRS-80, and your blog has brought back a lot of good memories.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your kind responses. It's nice to have so much support.
ReplyDeleteJust adding to the chorus - I check the site pretty much every sixty hours on the dot since I spend most time I’m not actively reading a post looking forward to the next one! It’s been great to discover and revisit RPGs of days past through your eyes, and I’m very interested to see what you make of the upcoming “dark age” (albeit one with lots of light at the end of the tunnel).
ReplyDeleteLet me add one more praise to the choir: I'm among those reading for years and years, hoping for more years to come. You are creeping up on years I start having memories about, so I might have to comment more, too!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I missed this post.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and happy birthday !
I follow you since 2017, but you know I did read every post from the beginning.
I know this is a little late but congrats on the anniversary! Thank you so much for the many years of great writing!
ReplyDeleteChet, I wish you at least 15 more CRPG Addict years to come. I have read your blog for more than ten years, scrolling though every post. I have quoted you and referred to your postings in articles. I just wish I would see more reviews of games I have heard of beforre but it is your blog! Cheers from .fi!
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary, always love reading new entries.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary - always enjoy your entries. I discovered you late into your 10th year doing this, but I've kept up with you ever since. Glad to hear you plan on continuing. Thanks for your work! Even when I have no interest in the game at all, it's always fun tagging along with you as you review it.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 15 years! I've been following you almost that time (off & on) Keep up the interesting posts!
ReplyDeleteHeck, I should also be here at the weekends. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteIt is awesome milestone and we are fortunate to have you keeping up the blog through all these years.
I wasn't able to find my way here until I learned after the fact of your coverage of Braminar, so I missed a few good years of startup, but absolutely you've been a highlight of every week since then, which is more than the Billboard charts or cinema offerings can say, so hats off for an extraordinary run and ... basically, carrying the torch for a compelling style of hyperfocused long-form blogging on niche indulgences that has essentially gone extinct since you started this project. Enshittification didn't even exist at that time, and now you're the only thing on the Internet not subject to it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I've been following your adventures since I stumbled on this blog back when the internet was fun.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the insight you and many of commenters have shared on crpg history and looking forward to to more in the future.
Congratulations! If I recall correctly, I first found this blog when searching for Eye of the Beholder images. I read some of the Eye of the Beholder coverage, and eventually started reading other entries. This blog is a true gem.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Chet! I have enjoyed reading your writing for many years and look forward to many more. Heck of an achievement to maintain a quality blog for this long.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Thank you so much for all your hard work in getting your experiences down in writing for all of us to enjoy. To many more years!
ReplyDelete"It's been a fun ride; I still enjoy it; I have no plans to end it soon. "
ReplyDeleteThose are just about the best statements a long-time fan of the blog could read.
Thanks for the company during my long morning commutes, which is when I end up reading 90% of the posts.
I feel like the 10-year anniversary post came just yesterday! In any case, congratulations and a heartfelt "thank you" for sticking with it for this long! I rarely post, but I read (nearly) every entry (eventually) and sincerely appreciate every one!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chet. This blog brightens my day and makes the world seem a little more fun and thoughtful, just by existing (though "existing" sells short the effort involved). You're contributing more than you may realize to the world, in scholarly and parasocial and other ways.
ReplyDeleteHey, I only discovered this blog a few weeks ago and just wanted to say I really love it. I absolute admire your commitment, and the prose is great too. The analysis goes deep enough to be both interesting and informative, while still keeping the read smooth. You are also making me discover a lot of hidden gems: aparts from the big names, it's becoming harder and harder to google for "RPGs of the 80s" and getting meaningful results, so you created a great archive for posterity.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, you inspired me to start a side project and try to create my own Ultima clone (yes, I think the world needs another one :)). If I ever manage, I promise it won't have one-liner NPCs or oversimplified combat with no magic :P
Keep it up, you might not be as big as certain YouTubers, but your are nevertheless fighting the good fight
Thanks, Frin. Let us know when it's done. And it sounds like you're off to a good start: clone U4 or U5, not U1-3.
DeleteCongrats on 15 years! I also comment rarely but read everything here, and I have continued to enjoy your coverage of obscure or not-so-obscure titles year after year. If a book is ever in the works, I would be happy to help, like with gathering statistics or proofreading.
