CRPG Addict Appearance on the DOS Game Club Podcast

Hi, everyone. I thought I'd let you know that back in February, I joined four other commentators for an analysis of Ultima Underworld on the "DOS Game Club" podcast. The episode has just been released. One of my co-commentators is Richard of Pix's Origin Adventures.

I'm due to join them again at the end of the year for a Betrayal at Krondor discussion.

  1. Enjoyed the conversation! Your Ultima Underworld coverage was what brought me to this blog in the first place, so I have much to thank it for.

  2. Enjoyed the conversation likewise. I am terrible at recognizing voices, so in general I don't know when you were talking or when someone else was talking, but getting a deep-dive on the game was sweet. I am looking forward the Betrayal at Krondor's one - I surmise you will be the only person around the table having read the book.

Now I checked their list of postcasts and hmm, I guess I should listen to a few others as well. Surprised and happy to see games like Transarctica for instance.

    1. That's funny, Narwhal, since they all speak with distinctly different accents.

    2. Well, to you maybe, but for me (French person) in that meeting, the only accent that stood out was the English accent. I found Chet had a deeper voice than anyone else, but in the flow of it I could not make the difference. I am just terrible at this.

    3. All accents stood out distinctly. Chester's voice in particular displays his prior knowledge of public speaking. Strong and clear, but also the other casters showed excellent skill in their delivery.
It's good to put a voice to our addict, I must say!

  3. Just listened through it, a pretty understated - may I say cool - performance from Chet, albeit very little to learn, but that's just me/us. I'm still looking forward to the 'BaK' episode, but the host calling 'UU' the first RPG doesn't exactly inspire confidence in their expertise.

    1. Ha, it took me a minute too but I think they meant "first RPG" as in first in the style of Morrowind, et al.

  4. I appreciated the link immensely! I have not had interest in the game before your coverage, but this podcast was pretty good overall! I'll continue listening to their backlog. Both your coverage of this game and the additions from the cast were enriching. Thanks!

  5. Would you ever appear on Matt Barton's youtube channel?

    1. I don't know. Maybe. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to appear on video. I'm not as bothered by the idea of people from my professional life finding out about the blog as I used to be, but I also don't see any need to hasten that collision of worlds.

    2. Your appearance on Matt Chat would be awesome! You could add so much to the dialog there. Please consider this fully. If hiding your identity is still important I'm sure he would work with you some way to make it audio only.

  6. The DOS Games Club podcast comes out so infrequently it's always a treat when it hits my podcast feed, but I didn't read the show notes or anything either so Chet's name being read out provoked a "wait, what? Wow!" reaction from me while taking my walk. Great work!

  7. Just as a footnote: Today, while drawing (those two things work well together), I've listened to the 'The Last Express' episode of the DOS Club, and the self-proclaimed adventure game expert slash speedrunner said the game was not runnable, because after completing each step of a given segment, you'd have to wait before the next stop or scripted event arrives...

In the main menu of 'TLE' you can manipulate time with a stylized Fabergé egg, allowing you to fast forward by pressing the red gem on the right side of the clockpiece. Those guys never explored the GUI, nor read the reference card, but are trying to give sage advice.

Not really intending to bash on the DOS Club here, it was still an entertaining episode, but to be taken seriously, they'd have to cover the basics.

  8. I enjoyed listening to the podcast, and it was fun to put a voice to the addict after reading so many posts. I work in a customer facing role at a software company, and while it's not precisely the same, it reminds a bit of the pre-COVID revelations that would happen when meeting customers in-person after only hearing their voice for so long. It was always interesting to put a face to the voice. Since COVID video usage has become so common on remote meetings that these same types of revelations don't happen much anymore though.

  9. I'm a little over halfway through this podcast. It's been very enjoyable so far. If you're doing a BAK one also that would be awesome, as your coverage of that game is some of the best work you've ever done. I now feel like I've played a classic that I've always wanted to play but could never get into.

I welcome all comments about the material in this blog, and I generally do not censor them. However, please follow these rules:

1. DO NOT COMMENT ANONYMOUSLY. If you do not want to log in or cannot log in with a Google Account, choose the "Name/URL" option and type a name (you can leave the URL blank). If that doesn't work, use the "Anonymous" option but put your name of choice at the top of the entry.

2. Do not link to any commercial entities, including Kickstarter campaigns, unless they're directly relevant to the material in the associated blog posting. (For instance, that GOG is selling the particular game I'm playing is relevant; that Steam is having a sale this week on other games is not.) This also includes user names that link to advertising.

3. Please avoid profanity and vulgar language. I don't want my blog flagged by too many filters. I will delete comments containing profanity on a case-by-case basis.

4. I appreciate if you use ROT13 for explicit spoilers for the current game and upcoming games. Please at least mention "ROT13" in the comment so we don't get a lot of replies saying "what is that gibberish?"

5. Comments on my blog are not a place for slurs against any race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, or mental or physical disability. I will delete these on a case-by-case basis depending on my interpretation of what constitutes a "slur."

Blogger has a way of "eating" comments, so I highly recommend that you copy your words to the clipboard before submitting, just in case.

I read all comments, no matter how old the entry. So do many of my subscribers. Reader comments on "old" games continue to supplement our understanding of them. As such, all comment threads on this blog are live and active unless I specifically turn them off. There is no such thing as "necro-posting" on this blog, and thus no need to use that term.

I will delete any comments that simply point out typos. If you want to use the commenting system to alert me to them, great, I appreciate it, but there's no reason to leave such comments preserved for posterity.

I'm sorry for any difficulty commenting. I turn moderation on and off and "word verification" on and off frequently depending on the volume of spam I'm receiving. I only use either when spam gets out of control, so I appreciate your patience with both moderation tools.
