Put an End to My Arrogance

If you've ever wanted to kill me, apparently you have a chance in Counter Spell, a new RPG from Abnormal Software, rather highly rated on Steam but curiously lacking a MobyGames entry. The shot below was submitted by reader JJ:

"Doesn't have much reach." Laugh while you can. One day, no RPG will be published without my stamp of approval!

It feels something like a Scorpia-in-Might & Magic III appearance, but it's my first time in an RPG outside of the credits, so I'm happy no matter what. For those of you who have played, feel free to comment on the experience, as I'm unlikely to get there until 2042. I might skip that quest.

  1. Haha, well congratulations on that. Not sure about the whole "dwarf" thing, but then we haven't really seen what you look like...
The game itself looks to me like vanilla WoW and Minecraft had a teleporter accident. According to the reviews it's probably fun to play, but I don't think it will make it on my personal playlist anytime soon. That one quest alone is a bit tempting, though.

    1. I AM somewhat short. It's creepy that they knew that.

    2. Weird- I always pictured you as somewhat tall, kinda thin, glasses, slightly balding... how far off am I on the rest of it? :)

    3. But your not DWARF short are you? Lol

    4. I went and bought this game- different sort of experience. Weird that it's largely online, yet not in the way you think. Quite different!

    5. I've enjoyed the heck out of it so far. Definitely play it with friends, though. Multiplayer is what brings the fun in.

  2. How I missed this game on Steam, is beyond me.

  3. This is a totally legitimate #humblebrag!

  4. Well, at least you're not a troll.

No such thing as bad publicity, eh?

  5. Bonus points if they did something interesting with player characters named "Chester Boilingbroke," or and of the other character names you usually use.

  6. Congratulations on reaching the level of "internet famous" that people include you in their games!

(And congrats also to the makers of Counter Spell who worked out a neat way to get free advertising among cRPG enthusiasts.)

  7. This is like having a song of yours parodied by Weird Al Yankovic: You haven't officially "made it" until it happens.

  8. curiously lacking a MobyGames entry

The past is always better represented than the present, there; so many new games come out these days that the best we can hope is to catch most of the most important titles and hope that someone else will someday fill in the blanks once the present becomes the past 8)

    1. Ironically, one of our internal "quests" is to get documented in our database all of the games you have played and reviewed here 8)

  9. 433XP and 23GP?

    That's pretty insulting, ain't it?

I'll bet it's one of the stalwart RPG Codex fellows who made that quest.

    1. I only got 75 xp for the last person I killed, so 433 is quite a bit.

    2. The question is: does Chester usually carry 23 gold pieces with him, or is that just the reward offered?

  10. Forgot about Scorpia in MM3. She still leads you 3 - 1 in game references since the Scorpitron shows up in Wasteland 1 and 2

    1. I also plan to include Chester in my ultima-like freeware game (im using ultima V tileset and some of its mechanisms like dialogue system) which will be released this year. So it's gonna be 2 - 3 and who knows what will happen in the future ;)

    2. The least you could do is to tell us who you are.

  11. Hey, someone finally made the connection! Chester has been in the game for about two years now. He's a low level elite in quest mode, but he is known for causing party wipes when he spawns in high level survival matches. He has a lot of health, but no ranged attack. The lack of ranged attack actually makes it easy to overlook him. Then he gets the drop on you when you least expect it and it's game over! Still waiting to see if the "Bolingbroke Bump" is a thing or not... ;)

I welcome all comments about the material in this blog, and I generally do not censor them. However, please follow these rules:

1. Do not link to any commercial entities, including Kickstarter campaigns, unless they're directly relevant to the material in the associated blog posting. (For instance, that GOG is selling the particular game I'm playing is relevant; that Steam is having a sale this week on other games is not.) This also includes user names that link to advertising.

2. Please avoid profanity and vulgar language. I don't want my blog flagged by too many filters. I will delete comments containing profanity on a case-by-case basis.

3. NO ANONYMOUS COMMENTS. It makes it impossible to tell who's who in a thread. If you don't want to log in to Google to comment, either a) choose the "Name/URL" option, pick a name for yourself, and just leave the URL blank, or b) sign your anonymous comment with a preferred user name in the text of the comment itself.

4. I appreciate if you use ROT13 for explicit spoilers for the current game and upcoming games. Please at least mention "ROT13" in the comment so we don't get a lot of replies saying "what is that gibberish?"

5. Comments on my blog are not a place for slurs against any race, sex, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, or mental or physical disability. I will delete these on a case-by-case basis depending on my interpretation of what constitutes a "slur."

Blogger has a way of "eating" comments, so I highly recommend that you copy your words to the clipboard before submitting, just in case.

I read all comments, no matter how old the entry. So do many of my subscribers. Reader comments on "old" games continue to supplement our understanding of them. As such, all comment threads on this blog are live and active unless I specifically turn them off. There is no such thing as "necro-posting" on this blog, and thus no need to use that term.

I will delete any comments that simply point out typos. If you want to use the commenting system to alert me to them, great, I appreciate it, but there's no reason to leave such comments preserved for posterity.

I'm sorry for any difficulty commenting. I turn moderation on and off and "word verification" on and off frequently depending on the volume of spam I'm receiving. I only use either when spam gets out of control, so I appreciate your patience with both moderation tools.
