Of co...o man, building this kind of games in basic. Of course it can be done, but why would you want to? It does explain the keyboard buffering problems. That's the default behaviour of the basic statements to read a key. But those are meant to allow the user to enter a text string, not for movement keys. He should have taken the time to learn C and do proper keyboard I/O.

Also it explains why the monster's movement speed depends on the system clock, but the game is too slow to set the clock low. Probably the game was very slow on the original hardware platform.Theonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-37157618235103143162019-04-14T23:04:23.506-04:002019-04-14T23:04:23.506-04:00There was a time this would have pained me and I w...There was a time this would have pained me and I would have insisted on putting an asterisk after "won!" because I used some cheats.

I think my rule on cheating has evolved to something like: for a truly good game that offers rewards throughout, I won't use any cheats, but if I've reached the point where the only reason I'm playing is to document the ending, the gloves come off.CRPG Addicthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01238237377918550322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-92107884848773029942019-04-14T23:02:47.074-04:002019-04-14T23:02:47.074-04:00UZ1 was a bit of a quick finish. That said, while I enjoyed wandering around the alien world back in the day, I ultimately found this one less engaging than Ultizurk I, especially because the NPCs, except the Shadowmaster and maybe the cavemen, all felt so bland. Add to that the endless backtracking and I could never be bothered to complete it, despite liking the other games in the series.
By the way, I'm almost certain The Great Ultizurkian Underland is actually the next game in line, rather than Ultizurk III.Boris Blažinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08819683226257736371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-53312238910573687582019-04-13T15:02:33.667-04:002019-04-13T15:02:33.667-04:00Looks like it was specifically the unreleased UZ4 ...Looks like it was specifically the unreleased UZ4 he worked on in VB. In another comment he refers to using QuickBasic for UZ1, which checks out -- the concentric circle effects he likes to use are very reminiscent of the kind of stuff you saw in amateur QBASIC programs, where it was pretty easy to draw effects like that with a loop and the CIRCLE statement. I spent an inordinate amount of time as a kid making 'screensavers' with effects like that in QBASIC.stepped pyramidsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-63701870110912630232019-04-13T11:51:10.736-04:002019-04-13T11:51:10.736-04:00There's no reason why you couldn't code pr...There's no reason why you couldn't code properly with VB6.
