I took two semesters of Russian on PLATO (a grad school requirement in Math), unfortunately I never stumbled on the games. The university was very serious about PLATO. I had friends that were TASs in the Math, Physics and English programs switch to working on PLATO.

In the early 70's I used to study in the CS library and often wondered at the strange noises that came from some of the cs people gathered around terminals in the back of the room--usually explosions. Looking back they were most likely fooling around with some early space cannon programs. Along the lines of games being systematically deleted, I was kicked off the system partly for writing games as "lessons" and partly for compiling an index of interesting games and lessons. I was told that my index "duplicated system pages," but later that the problem was that I hadn't contacted each author and requested permission to include their lessons in the index.

But before all that happened, I became hooked on games such as SPASIM (Spatial Simulator), Airace, dnd, and others. I developed a blackjack game, a version of the Inter-Nation Simulation political game, and started work on a "blackboard" for mathematical proofs (a pale subset of Mathematica several years earlier). Those got me excited about the idea of using a system like PLATO for making multi-player games.Corey Colehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16772474266362396768noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-2825467053880037402019-01-11T12:55:44.191-05:002019-01-11T12:55:44.191-05:00

Sadly, for the French equivalent (the Minitel) - which had more users since it was distributed to all French households in 1982 - there was no one to keep the history of all the games (including MMORPG !) that ran in it. I suppose PLATO had two advantage on this front : its "players" were from Universities or administration and thus more aware of the value of what they were playing, and the tool itself was free by the minute (as I understand) whereas you had to pay the price of a phone connection with the Minitel.

Sadly, I was too young myself to partake in that part of RPG history.Narwhal, the Wargaming Scribehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05808952600298482923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-1166788074820196922019-01-10T07:02:58.667-05:002019-01-10T07:02:58.667-05:00VERY long time lurker here,
