He and his friends were very computer oriented, when they would have aged into video games, the home consoles weren't very robust. The NES wasn't much to bother with until 1988/1989.

I was born in the mid-80s. My friends and I were much more console people. When we aged into video games, the NES was full steam and the 16-bit era was on, as well. There's even (limited) item interaction! It's more than Infinity Engine games (and the games that followed) ever had.

It also shows that Ultima 7 could have worked with turn-based combat. Dark Sun delivers the same fast-paced and quickly resolved combat, but with less confusion and error. Turn-based doesn't have to be slow.

Overall 8 out 10 for the first one. Don't know about the second yet.

I'm also certain now that Betrayal at Krondor will win the GOTY award for 1993. One of the places we visited was Woodlawn Cemetery, where Duke Ellington is buried. At the time, that's all I knew, so I was surprised when looking for Ellington's grave to find an enormous headstone for Miles Davis--apparently he deliberately bought the plot across the way from Ellington's. I took a few photographs and left, only later learning that if I'd walked around more, I could have visited Lionel Hampton, Max Roach, Jackie McLean, and a few others.CRPG Addicthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01238237377918550322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-62415315389987599642021-05-04T10:41:31.453-04:002021-05-04T10:41:31.453-04:00Congratulations! I really thought this year was a cross-fade with Ultima Underworld pointing to the future and Crusaders of the Dark Savant pointing to the past. 1992 was significant for me as it was the year I stopped buying CRPGs and went on hiatus. I did try to finish Crusaders, but that remains an unfinished goal. Only recently have I been able to explore more games from the mid to late 90s. So I am looking forward to your work. Miles Davis appreciated Duke Ellington. When Ellington died in 1974, he composed a work "He loved them Madly", which pioneered ambient sounds later explored by Brian Eno. Intellectual virtues include such traits as discipline, thoroughness, rigor, and openness. (By the last, I mean being open to criticism and suggestions.) And of those four, "thoroughness" and "openness" certainly characterize this blog; you reviewed _Dragon Warrior_, of all things.

The conscience, including the intellectual conscience, speaks when conscious reasoning goes astray; and to me it sounds like your intellectual conscience spoke up when it came to time to skip ahead. This might be because skipping was too big a departure from your vision for the blog, or it might be because there was an unnoticed flaw in the method you intended to use.

Say you used random number generation to select the game. This still leaves open the possibility of randomly selecting, say, Fallout, and then you'd face the prospect of "properly" reaching 1996 having already played its best game. But I don't know what method you chose, so I can only speculate.

Anyway. Thanks as always for a venue in which to articulate my thoughts. More than two decades on I remain a proponent of virtue ethics, and you can see why.Lhexahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17964132955838014919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-85983916118471151132021-04-23T15:20:52.367-04:002021-04-23T15:20:52.367-04:00No, I meant "confounded." I strongly dislike that game. In my opinion, it's like a JRPG with digitized actors in bad costumes instead of GLCM. Granted, it's been 30 years since I played it, but iirc, it promises an open-ish world, but what it delivers is more of a sequence of corridors you can move freely within. You have very little control over your characters' development. Combat was very frustrating and I remember my weapons were almost always broken. Opening treasure chests required solving an interminable series of riddles. I probably would have liked the game more if I had been familiar with the source material, but I wasn't and I always felt very lost.Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08236674968994362673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-7048478332014176902021-04-22T19:53:14.343-04:002021-04-22T19:53:14.343-04:00"I've accidentally confounded the issue&q..."I've accidentally confounded the issue"
You might have meant "compounded".Damienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01292483318253446632noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-9720185847299739112021-04-22T18:05:33.188-04:002021-04-22T18:05:33.188-04:00Name some of those better UU style rpg's pleas...Name some of those better UU style rpg's please.
