I discovered ...My party import wasn't seamless. I discovered that the DOS version of Pools doesn't have scroll bundles, so all my dozens of scrolls from Silver Blades disappeared. An even weirder bug was that my magic halberd didn't register as a weapon anymore. The character could ready it but it didn't show up as a weapon and he was doing only hand damage.

There was one bug in my favor too. I had a ranger wielding Long Sword Vs. Giants and Silver Shield. When I dualed her into a mage, the items were automatically unreadied but their effects persisted. So any weapon she wielded was treated as giant-slaying and she was reflecting gaze attacks. I had no idea how to fix this, but when her ranger levels activated again, I gave her back the original items, and I took care to unready all items with my other dual classing.

This time I decided to try a different order, and went to the red tower first. The final battle was a bit difficult but in general the tower was fine to do with a starting party. I suspect it really is possible to do the quests in any order you like, since there is very little difference in power at these levels anyway (the main difference, I would say, is in mage levels for fireball damage and bypassing magic resistance). Pools also makes this easier by having many safe rest areas, so attrition is not a problem. Especially not attrition of hit points, since Fix seems to work often even when resting for magic is always interrupted.

Interestingly, by doing the quests in a different order, I've begun thinking of the game as more linear. Previously, I saw the game as fully non-linear, since you can do the quests in almost any order. But the enemies in the red tower were often introduced better in an area that I would have seen in the usual order already, so I felt that story-wise the game is designed to be played linearly. But at least there is the option, which makes replaying a bit more interesting.JayKnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-52765111778011805982016-10-24T02:36:03.200-04:002016-10-24T02:36:03.200-04:00Per 1st ed rules:

One, I loaded up an all-18's paladin to check, and they can also dual into magic-user, cleric, or--and this is contrary to the rules I've seen stated elsewhere, and probably a poor idea anyway--fighter and ranger. Paladins seem to require 15s in STR, WIS, and CON (CHA is given) to change into anything else. The CON requirement is weird, because it's not a prime requisite, or even a base requirement.

Likewise, the ranger can dual into a paladin if his alignment is lawful good. Not sure why anyone would want to do either of those.

So now I'm tempted by both a paladin/cleric and a ranger/magic-user, if I can stomach more fiddling.Quirkzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16409671254311123117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-9308242235294727242016-10-23T23:31:27.677-04:002016-10-23T23:31:27.677-04:00Apparently I overlooked the "you need a 15 in...Apparently I overlooked the "you need a 15 in your current class" portion of it, which really makes no sense to me. I think my ranger had a 14 in wisdom, and was thus ineligible to change to any other class, despite having high STR, INT, and CON. That really doesn't make much sense to me, that you need to be a superior instance of your current class in order to be allowed to change away. I would have thought that as long as you already met the base requirements for ranger, that would be enough.

This is further confounded by a manual that doesn't mention stats at all for dual classing, and falsely states the ranger's prime requisites are STR, INT, and WIS. Worse for my own sanity, right there in the manual in the dual-class section is a line about the ranger/magic-user wearing armor.

Anyway, mystery solved. Now I have to decide if I want to ditch the fighter/mage I've been building up because I couldn't get ranger/mage to work, or just live with it. It's probably not too bad with the Gold Box Companion running (if you haven't used that before, it's worth a look -- I know you don't want to cheat, but it can be highly informative about many things, including creature abilities, or experimentation. Very handy for research.)

I'd apologize for making you do my homework for me, but I spent half an hour searching for this on the web, so I know it's a valuable answer that will be out there for future confused people like me.Quirkzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16409671254311123117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-26996054788469845232016-10-23T20:23:48.723-04:002016-10-23T20:23:48.723-04:00Ahh, Thanks Chet - I think I got it confused with ...Ahh, Thanks Chet - I think I got it confused with the 2nd Ed reqs.Tristan Gallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16769219573533545742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-84954915895835909372016-10-23T19:54:14.257-04:002016-10-23T19:54:14.257-04:00I just fired up the game in DOSBox, created a rang...I just fired up the game in DOSBox, created a ranger, and verified that it could be done. Am I encountering a bug? Some of the notes I've found suggest dual-class only works for combinations that would be legal to multi-class, and there's no ranger/magic-user multiclass in the game. I'd assume it's just a bit of confusion and/or forgetfulness, except for the number of people who talk about it as if it's possible. I'm wondering if maybe it's available in other, later, D&D games, and people are mis-remembering it backward into the Gold Box series?Quirkzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16409671254311123117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-41782893286549688872016-10-20T20:18:42.651-04:002016-10-20T20:18:42.651-04:00Very evil. There's Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor, bad but 3.0 Temple of Elemental Evil, very accurate 3.0, Neverwinter Nights, still 3.0 (though altered in sometimes odd ways), Icewind Dale II, 3.0ish, and Neverwinter Nights 2 was actually 3.5. Then Knights of the Chalice and Incursion use the 3rd edition SRD under the Open Gaming License but are not technically D&D games because they don't have the IP, just the rules.malkav11https://www.blogger.com/profile/06785046340353526574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-19564332216312468052016-10-01T01:57:07.766-04:002016-10-01T01:57:07.766-04:00It's too bad that 5E is already out and thus t...It's too bad that 5E is already out and thus there's zero chance of a 4E computer game happening, WOTC not being known for their desire to promote out of date versions of the ruleset with new licensed content. It was practically tailor-made for the purpose.

Technically there was also a Facebook game based on D&D during that era, and since it was a turn-based tactical game I had had some slight hope that it would use real 4E.
