It's been a while since I've played it, but I think I would still enjoy it. I did try an Etrian Odyssey game a couple of years ago. It was decent fun, but the character classes didn't feel quite right, like I couldn't recognize a basic fighter/thief/wizard/priest dynamic. I still prefer Wizardry 1 even to that.

I've tried Ultima games like Ultima 4 on a computer. The interface feels clunky and unintuitive. (I prefer the NES version of Ultima 4.) The interface on Wizardry 1 is simple and intuitive though. I guess the beauty of Wizardry 1 is that it got combat right and it didn't try to do much more than that like story or world building. If we are talking about getting story and world building right, then I think it happens much later.The_Liquid_Lasernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-88914231734485827402021-03-08T21:12:07.537-05:002021-03-08T21:12:07.537-05:00Your blog is great, I'm engrossed in it, but y...Your blog is great, I'm engrossed in it, but yeah, actually, I would probably place my "good enough" threshold right around Baldur's Gate (I'd have to do some digging to find my exact line). Although I was aware of them from friends, I did not have a computer growing up, so I did not play these old games, apart from getting to mess around with them a bit here and there. However, I love CRPGs, so I want to know about the old games. But I do not want to play them. Unless you count updated versions of older roguelikes (e.g. Nethack, ADOM, etc.), the earliest CRPG I've attempted to play is perhaps Arena. Baldur's Gate feels "modern" to me compared to something like Morrowind, which has dated horribly despite coming out later. (Can't stand the combat or slow movement.)

You all talk about how the first era of gaming you experience affects your expectations. This is partially true for me as my favorite console is still the Super Nintendo. But there are exceptions. Although I've played the original Super Mario Kart and Pokemon Red/Blue, my favorites from those series are Mario Kart Wii and Pokemon Crystal.

For Japanese RPGs, the oldest ones that are still worth trying today are Phantasy Star 1, Final Fantasy 1, and Dragon Quest 3. My first experience with that genre was Super Mario RPG, so it's not 8 bit nostalgia in this case.

Herman Gigglethorpenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-42057057212768568182020-10-11T08:11:21.890-04:002020-10-11T08:11:21.890-04:00EoB 3 was made by a different team. I didn't get motion sickness but having to move my view around via keyboard and mouse breaks the immersion for me. Strangely, it didn't bother me with simulators like Gunship, Jane's Longbow, etc. because I was always in a cockpit and I don't know what it is really like to fly in a cockpit. However, I do know what it is like to walk, run, and move my head around so trying to emulate this via keyboard and mouse was frustrating disconnect always there like a constant dripping in the background. I think it is also the forgotten first FPS game. There were also a lot smaller features unseen, like the automap it had. But "good enough" were they before - it was more like it completed the "Family" of the different RPGs. For me good enough started with the various AD&D games of the late 80ies. For me, for a good RPG everything has to fit together - good gameplay, a good Story and good atmosphere (meaning also good graphics and music), and they were the first that had it. In terms of graphics, Canageek thinks "good enough" was reached for 2D in the VGA era, and I think 3D graphics reached "good enough" somewhere in the region of Resident Evil. In terms of movement mechanics, Super Mario Bros. was good enough in 2D, and whatever games first let you move in one direction while aiming in the other in 3D. I have gone back and tried to play some old CRPGs. I would say that good enough for me begins around 1990 with Ultima VI and Wizardry VI. I have beaten and enjoyed both those games within the last 10 years. I have also played and enjoyed Wasteland 1, but I haven't beaten it. I was born in 1986, so I was born late enough to not *know* the early CRPGs. I'll play Doom once in a while, but not for long, as it is fun but looks terrible. I'll play X-COM as there aren't many similar games, but spend a lot of the time longing for a better UI and graphics. However, with the later Infinity Engine games they hit that 'good enough' point where it just works, and I don't notice it. It looks good, and the controls aren't GREAT, but they are workable enough that I don't notice much. I was born in 1982, played games from an early age on, on the C64 and Amiga, and already before that on Ataris and systems I can't even remember anymore. One of the earliest games I can recall, is a game called Mercenary, an almost-RPG/adventure game, if I recall correctly. My dad played it with me....anyway... strangely, I would put my "good enough" much later than others here even though I actually played during the 8-bit days! I am playing Baldur's Gate right at the moment and find it a bit clumsy and hard to look at. But I really enjoyed Planescape: Torment a couple of months ago. So on the one hand, maybe my age puts the line a little later than elsewhere, but on the other hand, I can remember reading computer magazines back in late 80s/early 90s refering to The Bard's Tale as THE classic RPG game - on the C64.Alexander Sebastian Schulzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15135338616598357444noreply@blogger.com
