There is just something warm and tangible being able to hold and read it on paper...no scrolling or loading. No matter how hard I try to see it, online guides just don't hold the same appeal. Heck, I only switched to regular e-books 5 or 6 years ago. A good pal of mine started a D&D campaign with his girlfriend and her mother last year, and neither of them ever played an RPG before. He picked 2nd edition because that's the one he's most familiar with (due to Baldur's Gate).

The two newbie women had no issue understanding the game, as he managed to explain the rules very well and helped them with character creation. They just had to give him a description of what they wanted to play and he'd deal with all the rules stuff. Then during combat encounters it was just learning by doing. Seems to be an adventure system adaptation, but I haven't found any others. I have the Gloomhaven pc game on my wishlist. As for the board game I was thinking of, all I can say is where I heard of it, which was the excellent YouTube tabletop channel, Dicebreaker. I did a little searching, but couldn't find it. It involved trying to couple the simplest of rules with some method of either obfuscating or randomizing the adventure, so the player could be "surprised" with no external input.

This was, of course, before I had read this very blog and discovered the Lone Wolf/Fighting Fantasy books. In the case of Starflight, it was a ship's log; I think it used a similar conceit to the Bard's Tale guide, where at what would've been the end of the game the crew fails its mission and the captain somehow sends the log back in time to your hands. It was a pretty good read from what I remember.

Nice to see ASchultz get some recognition as well.
