I'm going to...WELP my long comment got eaten.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the UI and movable windows Chet.

Point one: Have you heard the story about the perfect sauce? It was a really early market research thing. They hired a company to research the perfect pasta sauce for them. The company came back and indicated there was no perfect sauce, different people liked different sauces. But you could divide them into three broad categories, one of which no one was currently making a premade sauce for.

Now, video game companies rarely have the time and budget to make multiple UIs, so giving people the ability to move around windows, remap keys, etc can be a real help. (I know that remapping keys for example can be a big help two disabled gamers who have to play with alternate controllers and such). But even moving the windows around, deciding if I want to leave the inventory open as I play for convenience or take in the art, etc, is nice.

I know you play Skyrim on console, but have you seen SkyUI? Or Fallout 4's FallUI? Both major, highly customizable UI mods. I really enjoyed being able to tweak and move around all the UI element on screen in Fallout 4 once I had a mod for that.

The ultimate version of this would of course be Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn where you can move around EVERY screen element. Want the health bar on the right top instead of the left? Sure. What to add an extra FIFTEEN quick access bars instead of the default one? Shine on you crazy diamond. Are you one of those people who never gets it mixed up if you are using fire or ice magic, and knows what stage you are at? Turn off the screen indicator for that, why not. (And I think you can save versions of your layout, so that you can have a minimalist travelling in the wilderness mode, and a max buttons, raiding mode, but I could be wrong on that). Here is a video showing all the things you can tweak: https://youtu.be/zE_cJ3iZbFgCanageekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03770924810559440307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-57622632397726382622019-01-23T01:11:37.304-05:002019-01-23T01:11:37.304-05:00This explains a lot about how frustrating it is pl...This explains a lot about how frustrating it is playing nintendo and sega games on a raspberry pi, for example.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05440099404971494290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-26439521584107392832018-10-05T11:30:57.481-04:002018-10-05T11:30:57.481-04:00Well, I may be wrong, but could not "yratgu b...Well, I may be wrong, but could not "yratgu bs rknpgyl gra srrg vf ubj ybat vg vf" be an answer?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17044384583192888822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-55866413155508409412018-08-03T23:43:59.506-04:002018-08-03T23:43:59.506-04:00Mass is constant, weight is the force exerted by g...Mass is constant, weight is the force exerted by gravity, which is proportional to mass - but the constant of proportionality may vary.

If your mass is 100 Kg, it is the same on Earth or on the Moon - but on the Moon your *weight* is only a sixth of what it is on Earth, and you can leap about very freely.

A different force, e.g. a magnet, will see no difference whether you are on the Earth or on the Moon. As i thought that I simply lost my touch with the action titles thinking that that was just me spoiled by the excellent controllers of today being unable to cope with old-school controls. Now as soon as I can I'll dust off my old CRT tv and see if there's some improvement! I think a lot of people who think they've lost their gaming skills as they age -- or who think old games make impossible demands on players ("Nintendo hard" and all that) -- are actually suffering from TV input lag.

Many lower-end HDTVs lag badly even when receiving HDMI and not upscaling or A>D converting at all. My own TV, which I bought specifically because it allegedly had very low input lag, actually has more like 150-200ms of lag -- even in quote-unquote "game mode" with an HDMI signal. Yeesh. So I still keep a CRT around for action games, and it really does make a difference.PK Thunderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14416777230563913195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-41867042043124186192018-07-18T17:19:48.799-04:002018-07-18T17:19:48.799-04:00Those can come from the oddest places, too. My personal "favorite" was discovering that older (pre-HDMI) consoles have serious input lag on non-CRT televisions (the higher-end TVs have built-in ways to mitigate this, but on cheaper ones it can sometimes be measured in full seconds) due to the upscaling and analog-to-digital conversion that is needed. That's something that I would have *never* anticipated.

Gnomanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13920812227941556716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-9380063407028073152018-07-18T12:09:08.584-04:002018-07-18T12:09:08.584-04:00One from me too! Vintage gaming/retro...One from me too! Great post.

Vintage gaming/retrogaming can feel like a minefield of situations where a game's weird behavior or seemingly bad design turns out to be a consequence of a later hardware revision or OS update the designers couldn't have reasonably anticipated. Two examples that come to mind are the Sega 6-button control pad (which can mess with games that predate the controller in odd and obscure ways, including hard crashes!), and things like artifact colors or semigraphics modes that don't come off when older games are played on newer hardware revisions (or less-accurate emulators, but that's a different discussion...).PK Thunderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14416777230563913195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-65096133068915988522018-07-16T17:50:24.114-04:002018-07-16T17:50:24.114-04:00Thank you for giving me the excuse to write up the...Thank you for giving me the excuse to write up the ad! When this game came out in 1989, the default behavior was that only one application could be open at a time. Even the Finder would disappear, leaving the application a blank desktop on which to lay itself out, with no possibility of clicking through to something else. There was an optional MultiFinder mode that allowed multiple visible programs, but games (including this one, in the manual) would often tell you to turn it off before playing so they could have the RAM and CPU to themselves.

The makers of Citadel intended the title screen to scroll over the user's choice of desktop pattern, but not over a mess of accidentally-clickable Finder windows.

In 1991, the new "System 7" OS brought about forced, always-on multitasking. Games made after this would have to go out of their way to claim the entirety of the screen. Those made earlier, whose developers lacked the time or money to make significant changes, were left with the aesthetic and usability blemishes you've encountered.

I would suggest playing games from this period with System 6.0.8 in the Mini vMac emulator.

About the codewheel: the 35-megabyte package I got from Macintoshgarden.org has a PDF of it along with the manual and hintbook. If you set your reader to fit the whole "page" on-screen and scroll down, it simulates turning the wheel.Adriennenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-87188495165890435642018-07-12T13:06:43.384-04:002018-07-12T13:06:43.384-04:00Exactly, and 30% is definitely not enough!Exactly, and 30% is definitely not enough!Mag Wielki i Szelkihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01807838665939928892noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-13203759227052021522018-07-12T08:05:04.203-04:002018-07-12T08:05:04.203-04:00I thought the plural for magus was magi?
