I've played a bit of the original Zork and enjoyed it, the idea of adding rpg elements and combat sounds enticing and its clearly well written, but I've just never been able to get past how obtuse adventure game puzzles can be. Even the more fair ones like Day of the Tentacle leave me banging my head against the wall and looking for hints. smisknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-6920268799856960572018-02-02T09:56:45.608-05:002018-02-02T09:56:45.608-05:00Zork I combat isn't *totally* random. The number of points you have counts as your combat ability, so if you get some points before encountering the troll, it goes much better.Danielhttps://dlowe.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-17337328759857519842015-04-28T12:55:14.761-04:002015-04-28T12:55:14.761-04:00'Moss of Mareilon'... There's probably a whole bunch of references in ADOM that I never picked up on.

Thinking of it, I can't wait till you get to 1994 and hit X-Com, ADOM, and Arena. I'm seeing a lot of references to 1988 as a great year, but for me 1994 was a terrific year to be a gamer. Not just RPG's, but Master of Orion, Master of Magic, Panzer General, Front office Football. I found that there were a few ways to do it. I could levitate him out, break open the door (with sufficient strength), or give him a chest that teleports whoever opens it to a land of unicorns. I suppose the SAYONARA wand would have also worked.CRPG Addicthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01238237377918550322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-48331243197890623552010-11-07T01:06:20.332-04:002010-11-07T01:06:20.332-04:00Zink, I've made it my mission to get revenge o...Zink, I've made it my mission to get revenge on the cook. I tried getting him to open a cursed chest, I've tried attacking him with all manner of weapons and wands... the best I could do was give him an electric shock from the bearskin rug (more on that tomorrow).

Stu, I agree with you. At best, it's an interactive fiction game with "quasi-RPG elements." It is a questionable inclusion on MobyGames's list. I like it, though, so I'm not quibbling too much about it.CRPG Addicthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01238237377918550322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-89616008477318899672010-11-06T23:31:14.271-04:002010-11-06T23:31:14.271-04:00One thing about the puzzle-solving in this game: s...One thing about the puzzle-solving in this game: sufficiently high stats will often let you skip puzzles. For example, if you had created a character with enough Strength to start with, you wouldn't have needed that amulet to break the door.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00107460815350587066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-61046400181160523762010-11-06T22:17:41.077-04:002010-11-06T22:17:41.077-04:00Its a IF game with stats thats not an RPG.
