But say you gain firearms as a personal skill, it's the only one you have, and you're also using firearms so levelling it naturally as well as at level up. You could easily hit 100 and have no other personal skills to put them into. Mad Gods editor is definitely worth using just for the bug fixes only to avoid that. Now, this would obviously have been a lot harder in the days when you had to back up a disk to do it, but it still implies that "pure" permadeath was not intended even at that point.

I've made a compromise now where I'm backing up my save about once per day, and only when I'm in town. I've lost the party once so far and barely even noticed the loss of experience for rolling back several hours of play--with the maps I'd developed, I was right back where I was pretty quickly.

The only bad thing was that my priest got different spells on level up so my PCs are all level 11 and DIAL is still the best healing spell I have. Not necessarily the Pacman "see how far you get then reset" permadeath, but the rogue style "adventurers are plundering the dungeon, see how far yours gets" combined with some aspect of maintaining continuity to build upon previous efforts to reach the end goal. In W1, resources were too constrained to make permanent dungeon changes (until W4/5 I think?), so items served that purpose. Make it out with the ribbon, whoever goes in with that ribbon can go to the next level. If they die, recover the ribbon and you can still go there. But maybe you have to build up new characters to go retrieve the ribbon. Note, however, that the game was not about triggering narrative events. That really stops making sense when new characters need to retrace the same steps.

Without permadeath, or even a sensible way to bring in a replacement character (you could do that in gold box, but it stopped making practical sense in CotAB) it becomes about the party you take from start to finish and the narrative they move through.

So its not really about difficulty as design. Wiz1 was designed to be the CRPG version of Tomb of Horrors. start throwing characters at it until some stick.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-34528247429193080672022-12-07T14:26:13.902-05:002022-12-07T14:26:13.902-05:00Regarding the Gold box games, you just learn to al...Regarding the Gold box games, you just learn to always save before stepping from a hallway into any big "empty" room Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-87104045083519143752022-12-07T14:21:55.739-05:002022-12-07T14:21:55.739-05:00The skill points locking bug was laid out in VI an...The skill points locking bug was laid out in VI and 7, but this is the first I had seen that there as are placed where the bug is more likely. When I finally played Bane two years ago I made an Excel sheet planning ahead race and class combinations and changes of profession. E.g. with a fairy, you're mostly limited to professions with a minimum strength requirement, as it will be hard to get the strength up from the fairy minimum. Sometimes you can help yourself with intermediate professions.

Wizardry's character development is really quite complex for its time. But with the random nature of leveling, changing professions this way often requires some reloading (and grinding so that you're not faced with a level-up after a boss fight). I think the most enjoyable way to play Wizardry is to limit profession changes to one per character, usually to switch to a prestige class. Switching is not really necessary, especially if you rolled a good character at character creation.Buckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07270991090065636515noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-61009436551654641802018-09-04T12:55:42.144-04:002018-09-04T12:55:42.144-04:00Wizardry 7 seems like both a major game and a seri...Wizardry 7 seems like both a major game and a series of mini-games: Rolling up characters? That lute is a lifesaver and makes the earlier levels, when a bad roll on the encounter table can TPK you, that much less annoying. Even in the later game, it has its uses.

Dualling is one of my favourite parts of this game's design! It is really useful to get some useful skills up that are otherwise hard to raise (magic skills, mapping, artifacts, mythology).

Also, make sure one of your characters gets skullduggery up to 100 asap, makes the game much less aggravating in several spots. The easiest way to do that is starting a character as a thief: they get bonus points to skullduggery at levelup, level quickly, and get lots of physical skillpoints. Thieves suck in the long run, so dualling around level 8-10 is very useful.

One thing that has helped me out immensely is dualling (trialling, quadralling, quintalling...) everybody so they get at least some points in Ninjutsu. The option to hide in combat is extremely (!) useful, and the skill auto-increases with use.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6162314467762792782.post-60391088727318937582018-08-29T15:40:56.029-04:002018-08-29T15:40:56.029-04:00Not even that. There are places where you can find either 1 raven or two groups of alliphoots, both four monsters strong. This usually ends in party wipe out as this can happen near the road tp New City.
